ISTANBUL – China on Wednesday voiced firm opposition to what it described as “external interference” in Venezuela’s domestic affairs following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a strike on a suspected narcotics vessel.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing that China rejects the use or threat of force in international relations and opposes actions that infringe upon other nations’ sovereignty.
“China opposes external interference in Venezuela’s internal matters under any pretext,” Lin said. “We support international cooperation in combating cross-border crimes but firmly reject the United States’ unilateral and excessive enforcement measures against other countries or their vessels.”
He urged Washington to respect international law and instead pursue cooperation through recognized bilateral or multilateral legal frameworks.
Lin’s remarks came after President Trump claimed on Tuesday that US forces had conducted another strike off Venezuela’s coast, destroying a vessel allegedly involved in narcotics trafficking and killing six individuals.
The operation marked the fifth such strike by the US in recent weeks, as part of what Trump described as an intensified campaign against drug smuggling networks in the region.
