BEIJING: China has rejected what it described as U.S. political manipulation under the pretext of “overcapacity,” after Washington reportedly announced plans to launch trade investigations into 16 trading partners, including China.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, speaking at a regular press briefing on Thursday, said Beijing firmly opposes the use of the so-called overcapacity argument to justify political pressure and trade restrictions.
Guo stressed that China’s position on economic and trade relations with the United States remains clear and consistent, emphasizing that Beijing opposes unilateral tariff measures in any form.
He noted that tariff hikes and trade wars serve the interests of neither side and could negatively affect global trade and economic stability.
According to the spokesperson, disputes between the world’s two largest economies should be resolved through dialogue and consultation based on equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit.
Guo further described the “overcapacity” accusation as a false narrative, warning against using it as a tool for political manipulation in international trade.
