HAIKOU — Chinese and European electric vehicle (EV) experts are calling for enhanced global collaboration and opposing trade protectionism at the 2024 World New Energy Vehicle Congress (WNEVC).
Hildegard Mueller, president of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), emphasized that with the rapid advancement of technology, global industrial cooperation is crucial. She criticized the European Union’s anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese EV imports, warning it could ignite further trade conflicts. “The solution lies in an active industrial strategy, not protectionist measures,” Mueller stated.
Similarly, Geely Auto Group CEO Gan Jiayue urged collaboration, warning that additional tariffs on China’s EVs could harm both China’s economy and Europe’s. “The automobile industry thrives on global cooperation,” Gan stressed, advocating for free trade and fair competition.
Jochen Goller, from BMW AG, expressed optimism about China’s NEV market and highlighted the importance of cooperation for a low-carbon future. “Global challenges must be addressed collectively to achieve sustainable growth,” he said.
The 2024 WNEVC, themed “Low Carbon Evolution and Global Cooperation,” runs from September 27 to 29 in Haikou, Hainan province. The event focuses on fostering international collaboration to support the global green transition in the automotive sector.
