Outreach at BIUST Highlights Friendship and Longstanding China-Botswana Cooperation
Gaborone, November 8 (RKI) – The 17th batch of the Chinese medical team in Botswana conducted a free medical outreach program in Palapye, offering direct healthcare services to students and staff of the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST).
The event, held on Friday, drew around 120 participants who received consultations, health examinations, and traditional treatments such as acupuncture and massage therapy.
In his remarks, BIUST Vice Chancellor Otlogetswe Totolo praised the initiative as a reflection of the “strong partnership and goodwill between Botswana and China,” noting that the program not only improved community health but also reinforced ties of friendship and collaboration.
Fan Wandong, head of the Chinese medical team, said the outreach embodies the spirit of medical assistance and cultural exchange, emphasizing that Chinese doctors remain dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of Botswana’s citizens through compassion and professionalism.
Since the beginning of the collaboration in 1981, China has dispatched 17 medical teams to Botswana, deploying more than 500 doctors and nurses to hospitals in Gaborone and Francistown. Over the decades, these teams have provided medical care to more than three million patients, reflecting a lasting commitment to healthcare cooperation between the two nations.
