Embassies of Latin American nations in Qatar came together this week to host the second edition of “Coffee and Culture by the Sea”, held at the picturesque Hotel Chadi in Katara. The event, organized by the embassies of Central American countries and the Dominican Republic, celebrated the rich cultural heritage surrounding coffee and its power to connect communities across the globe.
The gathering welcomed diplomats, roasters, café owners, and coffee enthusiasts for an immersive experience into the region’s vibrant coffee culture. Alongside specialty coffee tastings—commonly referred to as “coffee cupping” attendees sampled a range of national products, including Guatemalan cardamom and chocolate from the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, all of which are deeply appreciated in Qatar.
Speaking with Mariam, Pablo, Economic Consul at the Embassy of Guatemala in Qatar, emphasized the cultural importance of such events:
“This is the second edition of the coffee cupping that we are holding with Central American countries and the Dominican Republic. These nations are recognized globally for their coffee traditions.”
He added:
“Each embassy is showcasing more than just coffee we’re sharing heritage. Guatemala, for instance, is proud of its cardamom, while Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic are highlighting their renowned chocolate.”
Though modest in size, the event attracted key figures from Qatar’s coffee industry as well as ambassadors from Latin American nations. Pablo also confirmed that the embassies plan to participate in the upcoming Coffee Expo in Doha this November.
Delivering a heartfelt message to the people of Qatar, Pablo said:
“We may be far apart geographically, but through coffee, we build bridges. Qatar has a beautiful coffee culture of its own, and in sharing this tradition, we feel closer united by our common love for coffee.”
“Coffee and Culture by the Sea” stood as a vibrant example of how cultural diplomacy can brew meaningful connections, fostering understanding and appreciation across borders.
