Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) recently concluded its flagship Community Engagement Program in Thaprek, Nepal, where a team of sixteen staff and faculty completed the construction of a biogas facility, fostering community empowerment. Crafted in response to Dean Safwan Masri’s vision, the program aimed to enhance unity and purpose within the university. Partnering with World Volunteers, GU-Q focused on sustainability and women’s empowerment, providing a clean energy source while minimizing firewood dependency, benefiting education and economic activities.
Reflecting on the experience, participants highlighted the community’s collective problem-solving approach and its applicability to campus and classrooms. The project fostered a strong sense of camaraderie, with participants pushing physical limits and embracing teamwork. Group dynamics were emphasized, promoting equal contribution and fostering a spirit of collaboration.
Beyond the physical labor, discussions on social change and personal growth enriched the experience, allowing diverse perspectives to flourish. Participants recognized the transformative impact of their actions, transcending individual roles.
Witnessing the biogas project’s potential impact on the community underscored the significance of appreciating small changes. Returning with gratitude and a sense of achievement, participants cherished shared memories and the knowledge of contributing to community building, both locally and within GU-Q.
The program exemplified the university’s commitment to experiential learning and social responsibility, inspiring participants to continue making meaningful contributions to society. Moreover, it strengthened GU-Q’s ties with local and global communities, fostering a deeper understanding of cultural and environmental issues.
Moving forward, GU-Q intends to build upon the success of the Community Engagement Program, expanding its scope and impact to further address pressing social and environmental challenges. Through such initiatives, GU-Q remains dedicated to nurturing responsible global citizens and promoting sustainable development worldwide.
