PRAGUE, Dec. – Czech President Petr Pavel on Monday appointed a new cabinet led by Prime Minister Andrej Babis, completing government formation following October’s parliamentary elections.
The appointment marks Babis’ return to power as leader of the ANO party. He previously served as prime minister from 2017 to 2021. Babis was sworn in on December 9, pledging to make the Czech Republic “the best place on our planet.”
During the ceremony, President Pavel said the government formation process proceeded normally and in line with constitutional requirements. He noted the cabinet takes office amid security challenges and economic pressures and urged it to act responsibly within the European Union and NATO.
The coalition government includes Babis and 15 ministers from the ANO party, Freedom and Direct Democracy party (SPD), and Motorists for Themselves. Together, they hold a majority of 108 seats in the 200-member Chamber of Deputies.
Under the coalition agreement, ANO secures eight ministries including finance and interior, Motorists take four including foreign affairs, and SPD holds three including defense. Four cabinet members, including Karel Havlicek, Alena Schillerova, Petr Macinka, and Jaromir Zuna, also serve as deputy prime ministers.
The new cabinet aims to address national challenges while strengthening Czech participation in EU and NATO affairs.
