COPENHAGEN, March 24: Polling stations opened across Denmark on Tuesday as voters cast their ballots in a general election that will determine the composition of the Folketing and set the stage for the formation of a new government.
More than 4.3 million voters are eligible to participate in the election, with polling stations open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time. To vote in parliamentary elections, citizens must be at least 18 years old, hold Danish citizenship, and have permanent residence in the kingdom, with certain exceptions for citizens living abroad.
The election will fill all 179 seats in parliament, including 175 representatives from mainland Denmark and two seats each from Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
A total of 12 political parties are contesting the nationwide vote. Under Denmark’s multi-party parliamentary system, elections often result in coalition or minority governments. After the vote count, party leaders are expected to begin negotiations to form the next government.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced the election earlier this year, ahead of the constitutional deadline, with preliminary results expected after polls close.
