MIRPUR (AJK) – February 17 – In a significant step to ensure timely medical care for inmates, the District Health Office (DHO) Mirpur organized a comprehensive chest screening camp at the Central Jail on Tuesday. The initiative was aimed at early diagnosis and prevention of lung diseases among prisoners, officials said, reflecting the health department’s commitment to inmate well-being.
Approximately 400 prisoners received detailed examinations, including chest X-rays, carried out by a dedicated medical team using state-of-the-art portable X-ray equipment. Sputum samples were collected for laboratory testing to identify any underlying infections. Medical experts also advised inmates on preventive measures, the importance of completing treatment courses, and consistent use of prescribed medications. In addition, guidance on personal hygiene, cleanliness, and balanced nutrition was provided to promote overall health.
District Health Officer Dr. Fida Hussain Raja and DIG Jail Mirza Irshad Jaral visited the camp to review the arrangements. Dr. Raja emphasized that most diseases are treatable if diagnosed early and managed properly, assuring that follow-up visits and routine screenings would continue to prevent untreated cases.
DIG Jail Jaral praised the health department’s efforts, noting that the jail administration is working to enhance medical facilities, ensure access to clean water, and maintain effective sanitation, all crucial to preventing disease outbreaks.
The camp was organized systematically, with registration, screening, and medicine distribution efficiently managed by Superintendent Jail Sanaullah, Dr. Jawad Ayub, and paramedical staff. Free medicines were provided to all inmates, and a special monitoring and treatment system was set up for those showing symptoms of illness.
A spokesperson for the DHO highlighted that such initiatives play a vital role in promoting health within prisons, ensuring early disease detection, timely intervention, and improving the overall quality of life for inmates.
