Doha, December 07 (QNA) – A high-level session at the Doha Forum 2025 on Sunday discussed global governance, multilateralism, and the governance of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, with the participation of leading international decision-makers and experts.
HE Maria Fernanda Espinosa, President of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly and Executive Director of GWL Voices, emphasized that the main challenges to effective global cooperation lie in managing interdependence, ensuring global public goods such as peace and security, and aligning national interests with the common good. She said the era of interdependence calls for rethinking national sovereignty and adopting shared sovereignty and collective responsibility, while strengthening the United Nations’ role in global decision-making.
HE Stefan Lofven, Chair of the SIPRI Board, stressed the need to reform the multilateral system and protect human rights. He referred to SIPRI’s 2023 report, which recommended reforming global governance through inclusivity, addressing the triple planetary crises, restructuring the financial system, bridging the digital divide, promoting peace, and preparing for future crises.
Themba Kalua, Director of the Pact for the Future Implementation at the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General, highlighted that commitment to the Future Compact is vital for building a just and sustainable world based on intergenerational solidarity. He noted that the Compact offers a roadmap for cooperation on artificial intelligence and sustainable development through data-driven, locally relevant policies.
Dr. Adriana Abdenur, Co-President of the Global Fund for a New Economy (GFNE), stressed the widening global inequality gap and called for addressing economic and social disparities through an international body that monitors inequality-related policies and provides evidence to decision-makers.
Concluding the session, Ahmed Khalid Al Sumaiti, Director at the National Planning Council, reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to supporting global governance and initiatives promoting justice and sustainable development, emphasizing cooperation among governments, institutions, the private sector, and civil society as essential for a more prosperous future.
