Doha, May 26, 2025
The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), in collaboration with national and international partners, is set to launch the international conference titled “Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Opportunities, Risks, and Visions for a Better Future” on May 27, 2025, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Doha.
Organized in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the National Cyber Security Agency, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), Huawei, and other key institutions, the conference will explore the intersection of emerging technologies and human rights.
Her Excellency Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah, Chairperson of the NHRC, stated that the conference will tackle one of the most pressing global rights issues in light of the growing influence of AI. She emphasized the need to establish ethical and legal frameworks that protect individuals’ rights especially privacy and ensure AI development is centered on human values, not merely commercial gain. She also highlighted AI’s potential in raising awareness of human rights through digital platforms.
The two-day event will bring together approximately 800 participants from around the world, including government officials, policy makers, technology experts, legal professionals, human rights activists, civil society representatives, academics, international organizations, and private sector leaders. The conference program features an opening session, four main panels on the first day, and a series of working group sessions and general discussions on the second day, culminating in a session to present key recommendations.
The agenda will cover 12 major themes, such as AI fundamentals (including machine learning and natural language processing), data privacy, algorithmic bias and fairness, freedom of expression, content moderation, AI governance, human rights-based AI policies, transparency, digital inclusion, and the equitable use of AI in sectors like health, justice, education, and the environment.
Participants will also address the legal and ethical dimensions of responsible AI use, the implications of AI in security and armed conflict, and its role in supporting democratic institutions and inclusive civic engagement. The impact of AI on media, employment, workers’ rights, and economic inequality will also be explored.
An exhibition will run alongside the conference, showcasing innovative AI applications and their impact on human rights, ethical governance, and sustainable development across societies and industries.
