Time Magazine has named US President-elect Donald Trump as its 2024 “Person of the Year,” marking the second time he has received this recognition. Trump first earned the title in 2016 following his unexpected victory over Hillary Clinton.
The magazine cited Trump’s “historic political comeback,” highlighting his role in reshaping the American presidency, driving political realignment, and altering America’s global standing. Time’s Editor-in-Chief, Sam Jacobs, described Trump as both an agent and beneficiary of a populist resurgence that challenges traditional liberal values.
Trump’s tumultuous year included convictions for business fraud and surviving two assassination attempts. Despite these setbacks, he secured a significant victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the November election, positioning him for a return to the White House with Republican majorities in Congress.
As he prepares for his presidency, Trump has pledged sweeping immigration reforms and significant tariffs that could impact global trade. He has also signaled a potential shift in US foreign policy, casting doubt on continued support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
Time noted that Trump’s influence remains polarizing yet undeniable, as he continues to dominate global politics. Other finalists for the award included Kamala Harris, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Russian economist Yulia Navalnaya.
Netanyahu’s nomination has drawn criticism amid Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza, which have resulted in over 44,800 Palestinian casualties.
Trump’s recognition underscores his enduring impact on American and global affairs.
