ANKARA – President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the insufficient global response to the atrocities committed against women in Gaza, noting that reactions are often shaped by the identities of victims and perpetrators rather than the severity of the crimes.
Speaking in Ankara at an event marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Erdogan said international pressure on Israel “has not been proportionate to the gravity of its actions.” He highlighted that two-thirds of the more than 70,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza were women and children — a figure he called “alarming for anyone with a conscience.”
Erdogan emphasized that justice must be defended regardless of the identity of the oppressor or the oppressed. He added that those who calibrate their reactions based on identity rather than principle are complicit in oppression and injustice.
He stressed that every attack on a woman’s life, dignity, or safety is an inhumane act that must be resisted without hesitation. Violence against women, he said, should never be used as a tool for ideological battles or political gain.
Calling violence against women and children “a betrayal of humanity,” Erdogan remarked that anyone who harms a woman “darkens both his hand and his conscience.” He reaffirmed his personal commitment, stating: “As president and as a father of two daughters, I will continue to lead the fight against violence targeting women and children.”
