ANKARA — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the Palestinian cause was a defining theme of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, despite Israel’s attempts to silence discussion.
“Despite Israel’s efforts to block it, the Palestinian cause left its mark on the UN General Assembly,” Erdogan said Monday in a televised address following a Cabinet meeting. He stressed that, apart from a handful of allies, “almost no one wants to stand alongside Israel or be seen in a photo with the Netanyahu government.”
Erdogan hailed the growing global recognition of Palestinian statehood, noting that 158 countries now recognize Palestine. He described the recent recognition by Britain and France — both permanent members of the UN Security Council — as “of paramount importance, even if long delayed.”
Positioning Türkiye as a leading supporter of Palestine, Erdogan reaffirmed his government’s commitment to standing with the Palestinian people in defense of their land, freedom, and dignity.
The Turkish leader also launched sharp criticism at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of dragging the region “into chaos just to hold onto his seat,” while facing mounting corruption probes at home.
Turning to relations with Washington, Erdogan said his meeting last week with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House was constructive. “I believe we will all see positive outcomes of the meeting in the coming days,” he added, without elaborating.
Türkiye has long advocated for Palestinian statehood and has consistently condemned Israeli settlement expansion, military actions in Gaza, and the humanitarian blockade. Erdogan’s remarks at the UN and afterward reflect Ankara’s ongoing efforts to place the issue high on the global agenda, while also highlighting Israel’s growing diplomatic isolation.
