Brussels, March 19: European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called for an immediate exit from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, stressing the urgent need to avoid further escalation amid continued US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Speaking as EU leaders gathered in Brussels, Kallas said the priority must be to end the war rather than prolong it. She strongly criticized Iran’s attacks on Qatar’s energy infrastructure, warning that such actions only deepen regional instability and create further chaos.
Kallas highlighted the broader geopolitical implications of the conflict, noting its connection to the ongoing war in Ukraine. She pointed out that Russia stands to benefit from instability in the Middle East, making it even more critical to reach a resolution.
The EU official also revealed that member states are reluctant to expand military involvement, particularly under Operation Aspides in the Strait of Hormuz. She noted concerns among ministers over a lack of consultation and uncertainty regarding the objectives of the conflict.
Emphasizing the importance of international law, Kallas stated that there is no clear legal basis for further use of force. She concluded by underlining that EU member states have no appetite to enter another war and remain focused on diplomatic solutions.
