EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas voiced concerns over the impact of trade wars, stating there are “no winners” following the U.S. decision to impose 20% tariffs on European goods. Addressing reporters before a defense ministers’ meeting in Poland, Kallas emphasized that these tariffs would inevitably raise consumer prices across the board.
Kallas highlighted the need for the EU to strengthen its defense industry and reduce dependency on the U.S. for military supplies. “We are buying a lot from the Americans right now, but we need to diversify our portfolio to ensure we have the capability to produce these products domestically,” she explained. The EU will also seek to forge stronger defense ties with other global allies.
Kallas also pointed out that European countries are currently providing over half of Ukraine’s ammunition and stressed the urgency of increasing support. “These things are moving very well, but we need to get help to Ukraine as fast as possible,” she stated.
Looking ahead, Kallas anticipated that additional short-term assistance for Ukraine would be announced at the defense ministers’ meeting, emphasizing the importance of military strength in Ukraine’s negotiations. “The stronger they are on the battlefield, the stronger they will be behind the negotiation table,” she added.
