Oslo, January 06 – Leaders of seven European countries have reaffirmed that Greenland belongs exclusively to its people, stressing that all matters concerning Greenland must be decided solely by Denmark and Greenland. The position was outlined in a joint statement issued on Tuesday by Denmark’s Prime Minister’s Office.
The statement was signed by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The leaders emphasized that Arctic security remains a critical priority for Europe and is essential to both international and transatlantic stability. They noted that NATO has identified the Arctic as a strategic priority and that European allies are strengthening their presence in the region.
The statement underlined that the Kingdom of Denmark, including Greenland, is a member of NATO, and that Arctic security must be ensured collectively with NATO allies, including the United States. It also reaffirmed commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, particularly sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of borders.
While describing the United States as an essential partner, the leaders referred to the 1951 defense agreement between Denmark and Washington. The remarks come amid renewed debate following recent statements by US President Donald Trump, who has reiterated American interest in Greenland.
