Paris, January 7 — French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Wednesday reaffirmed that “Greenland is not for sale,” firmly rejecting suggestions that the Arctic island could be acquired by the United States. He emphasized that Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and that its future must be decided through agreement between the Greenlandic and Danish authorities, stressing that the territory’s status is not open to negotiation.
In an interview with Radio France, Barrot dismissed any notion that a NATO ally would use force against another NATO member, stating it would make “absolutely no sense” and would run counter to alliance interests. He noted that he spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who reportedly ruled out the possibility of a Venezuelan-style intervention in Greenland.
Meanwhile, the White House has acknowledged that President Donald Trump and his team are considering a range of options, including military avenues, to pursue U.S. interest in acquiring Greenland — a move that has drawn international attention and concern.
Barrot added that France intends to respond to any threats in coordination with European partners, and he plans to discuss the matter with the foreign ministers of Germany and Poland.
The French stance aligns with broader European and Danish assertions that Greenland’s sovereignty and self-determination must be respected under international law and NATO principles.
