FRANKFURT, February 24 — Frankfurt residents enjoyed a vibrant display of Chinese culture as the city hosted its Chinese New Year Spring Festival, following the carnival celebrations. The festivities featured singing, dancing, and traditional arts, bringing a festive touch of red to central Frankfurt.
Red lanterns decorated the main stage, drawing crowds to watch performances by artists from southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region. The dance troupe showcased northern Xizang styles, part of China’s intangible cultural heritage, captivating spectators with graceful movements and colorful costumes.
“The performance is really wonderful. It’s my first time seeing Xizang dances in Frankfurt,” said 67-year-old resident Feldmann. The one-hour finale marked the conclusion of the second Chinese New Year Temple Fair, which opened Friday.
The opening ceremony featured a Dingbu dragon dance from Zhejiang province, performed by more than 10 artists mimicking leaps and flips, highlighting another national intangible cultural heritage.
Visitors also explored booths offering Chinese delicacies, Hanfu traditional clothing, sugar painting, and festival supplies, attracting many local attendees. Julia, a Goethe University freshman studying sinology, said the event inspired her to “learn more about Chinese culture.” City Council member Stella Schulz-Nurtsch noted that red symbolizes Chinese culture and that the festive spirit helped brighten the winter season.
The event was hosted jointly by the Frankfurt city government and the Chinese Consulate, a tradition reflecting longstanding cooperation and people-to-people exchanges. Deputy Mayor Nargess Eskandari-Gruenberg said the celebration strengthens ties and mutual understanding.
State Secretary of Hesse, Christoph Degen, emphasized that the Spring Festival is China’s oldest and most important cultural celebration. He highlighted the role of the Chinese community in Hessen and expressed hope for continued cultural and educational exchanges between Germany and China.
