Freezing temperatures claim lives in Gaza amid Israeli siege

Seven displaced civilians, including six children, tragically lost their lives in Gaza due to freezing temperatures and torrential rains, exacerbating the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by Israeli military operations.

Ismail Thawabteh, head of Gaza’s government media office, revealed on Monday that six children and a nurse succumbed to the cold over recent days. He warned that the toll could rise as displaced families endure harsh winter conditions in inadequate tents that offer little protection.

“The lives of displaced Palestinians are in real danger amid heavy rainfall and cold waves as their tents are worn out,” Thawabteh said, urging immediate international intervention to alleviate the suffering.

Since Sunday, the Gaza Strip has faced relentless rainfall and plummeting temperatures, worsening conditions for its 2.3 million residents. Many families, already displaced by ongoing Israeli attacks, lack essential supplies like clothing, bedding, and blankets, leaving infants particularly vulnerable.

The UN reports that 90% of Gaza’s population has been displaced, with the region under a crippling blockade. Israel’s ongoing offensive has claimed over 45,500 lives since the October 7 Hamas attack, despite calls from the UN Security Council for an immediate cease-fire.

Thawabteh held the US, Israel, and their allies responsible for the escalating crisis, calling on aid organizations to press for an end to the conflict. He warned that without urgent action, Gaza faces further loss of life and catastrophic conditions.

This dire situation unfolds as international legal bodies examine accusations of war crimes against Israeli leadership. Meanwhile, the population of Gaza remains on the brink of famine, with hope diminishing in the face of ongoing violence and neglect.
