PARIS, Sept. 9— French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday after losing a crucial confidence vote in the National Assembly.
Bayrou’s proposed budget plan, which sought to reduce government spending by billions annually, was rejected on Monday. The initiative faced strong opposition, with critics warning it would weaken social programs, increase inequality, and undermine economic stability at a sensitive time for France.
Assembly Speaker Yael Braun-Pivet announced that only 194 lawmakers backed Bayrou out of 558 valid votes, far below the majority required.
The defeat left Bayrou with no viable path forward, prompting his immediate decision to step aside. His resignation represents a serious political setback for Macron, who must now select a successor capable of rebuilding support in parliament, restoring confidence, and ensuring continuity in government policies.
The Elysee has not yet confirmed when a replacement will be named, though analysts believe the decision will shape France’s political and economic course in coming months.
