DAMASCUS – German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and her French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot met with Syria’s transitional government on Friday, marking the first EU diplomatic visit since the ouster of President Bashar Assad.
Baerbock expressed Europe’s willingness to support Syria’s political transition, provided the process includes all ethnic and religious groups. “A new beginning between Europe and Syria is possible,” she said after meeting Syria’s de facto leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, in Damascus.
During talks, Baerbock emphasized that lifting EU sanctions hinges on the inclusivity of the political process and the guarantee of human rights. She underlined that while Europe is prepared to support Syria’s transition, it will not fund structures rooted in Islamist ideology.
Barrot echoed her sentiments, affirming the importance of an inclusive government. Al-Sharaa, who greeted the diplomats at the palace without shaking Baerbock’s hand, outlined his government’s commitment to reforms but provided no immediate guarantees.
Baerbock stressed that EU-Syria relations depend on ensuring participation and protection for all citizens, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or religion.
The visit signals a cautious step toward reengagement with Syria amid hopes of fostering stability in the region. However, the path forward remains uncertain as Europe awaits concrete actions from Syria’s new leadership.
