Germany has announced its support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal for a 30-day “unconditional” ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. The move is aimed at de escalating the ongoing conflict and creating space for diplomatic negotiations.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed the call during a press conference in Berlin, emphasizing the importance of halting hostilities to allow humanitarian aid and peace efforts to reach affected areas. “A temporary ceasefire is crucial for the safety of civilians and the stabilization of the region,” Scholz stated, adding that Germany is prepared to work alongside international partners to facilitate dialogue.
The proposal, unveiled by President Trump earlier this week, calls for an immediate cessation of military activities by both Russian and Ukrainian forces, without preconditions. Trump expressed hope that the 30-day pause would lead to constructive peace talks, urging both sides to prioritize humanitarian concerns. “This is an opportunity for peace one that must not be missed,” he remarked.
Russia has yet to formally respond to the proposal, while Ukrainian officials expressed cautious optimism, highlighting the need for guarantees of compliance. International observers have also welcomed the initiative, calling it a “positive step” toward reducing tensions.
The United Nations and NATO have both voiced support for the ceasefire proposal, with Secretary-General António Guterres describing it as a “window for peace.” Diplomatic circles are now anticipating further discussions to solidify the temporary truce into a sustainable peace agreement.
The coming days are expected to reveal whether key stakeholders will seize this opportunity to pursue lasting peace in Eastern Europe.
