Berlin – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has urged Russia to uphold its commitment to a partial ceasefire in Ukraine while reaffirming Europe’s continued military and political support for Kyiv.
Speaking in Brussels before a European leaders’ summit, Scholz welcomed Russia’s agreement to halt strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure but emphasized the need for tangible action.
“There is now a first step following talks between the Russian and US Presidents, but this must become reality and lead to a ceasefire that truly holds,” Scholz stated.
He reiterated that the European Union remains committed to strengthening Ukraine’s negotiating position. “It is crucial that Ukraine remains independent, sovereign, and democratic, continues its EU path, and maintains a strong military even after a peace agreement,” he said.
Scholz’s remarks come amid renewed diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. While Russia has agreed to halt attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, previous ceasefire attempts have been short-lived. Western leaders remain cautious about Moscow’s long-term intentions.
The European Union has pledged ongoing military and financial assistance to Ukraine, ensuring it remains resilient in negotiations with Russia. Scholz emphasized that any future peace agreement must protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
As discussions continue, European leaders are expected to reinforce their commitment to Kyiv while monitoring Russia’s adherence to the ceasefire.
