ACCRA, Feb 27, A joint operation by the Ghana Navy, Ghana Air Force, and local fishermen successfully rescued 71 fishermen stranded at sea following an armed attack by suspected sea bandits, the Ghana Armed Forces announced Thursday.
According to the Armed Forces, the rescue mission began in the early hours about 35 nautical miles off Ghana’s coast and concluded successfully with all fishermen safely recovered.
“The fishermen became stranded after they were attacked by robbers who stole their outboard motors and personal belongings,” the statement said.
The operation involved a special boat squadron with swift interceptors, backed by other naval vessels and air support from the Ghana Air Force. Authorities emphasized that the Navy continues to patrol the country’s exclusive economic zone to ensure maritime safety.
The Ghana Armed Forces urged fishermen and other maritime users to remain vigilant, exercise caution, and report any suspicious activity while the incident remains under investigation.
This successful rescue underscores Ghana’s commitment to protecting its maritime workers against criminal threats and maintaining security in its territorial waters.
