Former Pakistan Test coach, Jason Gillespie, has accused his successor, Aqib Javed, of undermining him and ex-white-ball coach Gary Kirsten in a bid to take full control of the national team. The allegations follow a social media post in response to remarks made by Javed regarding Pakistan’s coaching staff after the team’s early exit from the Champions Trophy.
Javed had expressed frustration over the frequent changes in Pakistan’s coaching and selection staff, citing 16 coaches and 26 selectors in two years. He stated that such instability made it difficult for any team to perform well under such conditions.
In response, Gillespie described Javed’s comments as “hilarious” and claimed that Javed had been actively campaigning behind the scenes to take over as the head coach for all formats. “Aqib was clearly undermining Gary and I behind the scenes,” Gillespie remarked. “He is a clown.”
Javed has not yet addressed the allegations publicly. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been contacted for comment on the matter.
Kirsten resigned as white-ball coach in October after just six months, with Gillespie filling in for the limited-overs series against Australia. Following the Champions Trophy, Javed took over as interim white-ball coach, and his tenure has been extended for the tour of New Zealand, which includes five T20s and three ODIs starting March 16.
Gillespie, who had signed a two-year contract with PCB in April, resigned as the red-ball coach in December amid reports of strained relations with the board.
