Shubman Gill’s brilliant unbeaten 101 anchored India’s successful chase of 229, securing a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their Champions Trophy opener on Thursday in Dubai.
After Bangladesh were bowled out for 228, thanks to Mohammed Shami’s superb 5-53, India faced a tricky target. Bangladesh had been reduced to 35-5 by Shami’s early breakthroughs before Towhid Hridoy (100) and Jaker Ali (68) resurrected the innings, sharing a 154-run partnership for the sixth wicket, despite two dropped catches by India.
India’s chase started strongly with Rohit Sharma’s 41, but quick dismissals left them at 144-4, raising concerns. Virat Kohli (22) failed to build on his early starts. However, Gill remained composed, supported by KL Rahul (41*), as they shared an unbroken 87-run partnership to guide India home with 21 balls to spare.
Shami was the star with the ball, and Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya’s fielding efforts helped India reduce Bangladesh to 35-5 early. Despite Bangladesh’s recovery, India never looked in danger, with Gill registering his eighth ODI century. The win sets up a high-stakes encounter for India against Pakistan on Sunday.
