GU-Q Students Explore Diplomacy and Peacebuilding
Georgetown Qatar (GU-Q) facilitated enriching global experiences for its students focused on diplomacy, conflict management, and peacebuilding during the spring break. In one initiative, students enrolled in the Women as Changemakers course journeyed to Washington, DC. Here, they forged connections with policymakers, delved into the workings of key institutions such as the World Bank, and delved into the significant roles women play in global affairs. Led by Dr. Christine Schiwietz, the program aimed to empower students to enact change by bridging academic learning with practical experiences. Visits to the GU Women’s Center and Center for Social Justice on the main campus furthered their understanding of these issues.
Simultaneously, another group of students participated in the Zones of Conflict, Zones of Peace program, which took them to Finland and Estonia. Focusing on post-Soviet Eastern Europe, the students engaged in discussions with officials, ambassadors, and academics to gain multifaceted insights into diplomatic communication and reconciliation efforts. Under the guidance of Professor Edward Kolla, the course provided a comprehensive examination of historical contexts and contemporary challenges in the region.
As a culmination of their experiences, students developed reflective e-portfolios to document their personal and professional growth throughout the programs. These initiatives exemplify GU-Q’s commitment to providing students with practical insights and experiential learning opportunities in global affairs and diplomacy.
