OSLO, Jan. 19 – Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Monday reaffirmed that the latest statements from the United States, including tariff threats, will not alter Greenland’s firm stance on its right to decide its own future.
“The latest statements from the United States, including the tariff threats, will not change our position. We will not let ourselves be pressured. We stand firm on dialogue, on respect and on international law,” Nielsen said in a post on Facebook.
The Prime Minister praised demonstrations held over the weekend in several cities in Denmark and Greenland, calling the events “impressive” and highlighting the “strong and dignified unity” shown by the public.
He also acknowledged support from other countries and leaders, emphasizing that it represents recognition of Greenland as a democratic society capable of making its own decisions, rather than foreign interference.
Thousands of protesters gathered in Copenhagen on Saturday to voice opposition to U.S. remarks suggesting control over Greenland, while mass demonstrations were also reported in Greenland’s capital and other Danish cities. Protesters chanted slogans including “Greenland is not for sale.”
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen retaining control over defense and foreign policy. The United States maintains a military base on the island. Since returning to office in 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in “obtaining” Greenland.
