CAIRO/JERUSALEM, Nov. 23 — A Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo on Sunday to meet with mediators working on a ceasefire in Gaza, according to Egyptian and Hamas sources, as tensions continue between Israel and the Palestinian militant group.
A Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the discussions would focus on Israel’s “continued violation of the ceasefire agreement.” The delegation is expected to address the latest flare-ups and explore ways to prevent further escalation in the conflict.
The visit follows deadly clashes over the weekend. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reported that Israeli forces killed five senior Hamas members on Saturday after a fighter infiltrated Israeli-controlled Gaza territory in an attempted attack on Israeli soldiers.
Gaza health officials confirmed that at least 20 people were killed during Israeli airstrikes on Saturday, including a local Hamas commander, according to the Israeli military.
The Cairo meetings aim to de-escalate hostilities and reinforce diplomatic channels, though both sides continue to trade accusations of ceasefire violations. Observers note that successful mediation will depend on sustained dialogue and adherence to prior agreements, as regional and international actors monitor developments closely.
The Hamas delegation’s discussions in Egypt underscore ongoing efforts to stabilize the region and prevent further civilian casualties amid the volatile Gaza situation.
