Doha, October 15 (QNA) – Under the patronage of HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, the high-level preparatory meeting for the 6th session of the Islamic Conference of Labour Ministers (ICLM) commenced in Doha on Wednesday. Organised by the Ministry of Labour in collaboration with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the two-day meeting, running from 15 to 16 October, brings together representatives from over 50 Islamic countries, alongside international organisations, experts, and civil society representatives. The event is held under the theme: “Local Experiences, Global Achievements: Success Stories Across the Islamic World.”
The meeting was presided over by HE Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour Sheikha Najwa bint Abdulrahman Al-Thani, with the participation of Undersecretaries of Labour Ministries and senior OIC officials. In her opening remarks, HE Sheikha Najwa highlighted the importance of enhanced cooperation and integration for securing a prosperous future for the Islamic world. She emphasised that the session reflects a collective commitment to advancing labour policies, employment, and social protection frameworks, with human capital at the core of development. She also reaffirmed the OIC’s support for sustainable development and the Palestinian cause.
HE Dr Ahmad Kawesa Sengendo, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Affairs of the OIC, praised Qatar for hosting the event and Azerbaijan for its leadership during the 5th ICLM. Dr Sengendo addressed global challenges such as geopolitical tensions, economic slowdown, and climate change, while highlighting opportunities from technological transformations, including AI and remote work. He stressed investing in youth skills and creating sustainable, rewarding employment to ensure social stability and growth.
The opening session also featured HE Rashad Mustafayev, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Protection of Azerbaijan, who commended Qatar’s hosting and recalled Azerbaijan’s role in previous ICLM sessions. He confirmed Azerbaijan will host the 16th OIC Summit next year and congratulated Qatar on assuming the chairmanship of the 6th ICLM, pledging support for human-centred and impactful outcomes across the Islamic world.
