HONG KONG, Feb. 18 — A spectacular 23-minute fireworks display illuminated Victoria Harbour on Wednesday night, marking the second day of the Spring Festival and the Year of the Horse.
The show began at 8 p.m. with dense bursts resembling galloping horses and cascading shells evoking a thundering herd. Symbolic patterns followed, including fireworks shaped like the numeral eight — associated with prosperity — and golden ingots representing wealth, drawing cheers from crowds lining both sides of the harbor.
The finale, titled “Triumphant Achievement,” featured large crown shells and rapid barrages, concluding the eight-act performance. In total, 31,888 shells were launched during the celebration.
Speaking before the display, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said the thunderous fireworks echoed the energetic spirit of the Year of the Horse and reflected Hong Kong’s unique blend of tradition and modernity as a meeting point of East and West.
Thousands of residents and tourists gathered along the waterfront hours in advance to secure prime viewing spots. Among them, a young entrepreneur surnamed Lau expressed hope that Hong Kong’s technology sector would “soar like the fireworks,” mirroring the city’s festive optimism for the year ahead.
