The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating military tensions in the Middle East has triggered a major energy crisis across Europe, pushing energy security to the top of the continent’s political and economic agenda. Rising fuel prices and disrupted energy supplies are placing heavy pressure on European economies and consumers.
The crisis intensified following joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory actions, along with threats to regional energy infrastructure and shipping routes. Global oil prices surged sharply, with Brent crude reaching around $119 per barrel, while fuel prices in several European countries crossed €2 per liter, increasing inflation and industrial costs.
European governments are implementing emergency measures to stabilize markets and protect consumers. The European Commission is preparing targeted and temporary measures under its energy support programs. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European energy sector has been directly impacted by the conflict and requires coordinated action.
Several countries introduced national measures, including tax reductions, fuel subsidies, price caps, and financial support for vulnerable households and key sectors such as transportation and agriculture. Spain announced a multi-billion dollar support package, while Germany, Italy, France, and the United Kingdom are implementing price controls and targeted subsidies.
The International Energy Agency warned the world is facing one of the deepest energy crises in recent history and called for energy conservation measures.
