SANAA – Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed they launched three attacks on the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea over the past 24 hours, using drones and cruise missiles, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea announced on Sunday.
Speaking on Houthi-run Al Masirah TV, Sarea said the strikes were in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas and in support of Palestinians. He warned of continued escalation “until the aggression on Gaza stops and the siege is lifted.”
The latest attack follows a series of Houthi-claimed strikes on U.S. forces since Washington resumed airstrikes on March 15, aimed at deterring the rebels from disrupting international shipping. The U.S. has accused the Houthis of endangering maritime trade by targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
Houthi media also reported 16 U.S. airstrikes targeting sites in northern Yemen on Sunday, including Mount Nabi Shu’ayb in Bani Matar District, west of Sanaa, and locations in Saada province. No casualties were reported, but local sources described significant damage to infrastructure.
The Iran-backed Houthis, who have controlled much of northern Yemen since 2014, have vowed to target Israeli-linked vessels unless more humanitarian aid is sent to Gaza. Their attacks have drawn international concern, with the U.S. and its allies increasing naval patrols in the region.
On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed that American airstrikes on Houthi positions would continue “for a long time.” Meanwhile, regional analysts warn that escalating tensions could further destabilize the already war-torn Yemen and disrupt key global shipping routes.
