India has apprehended nearly a dozen Bangladeshis attempting to cross the border amid escalating violence and political upheaval in Bangladesh, triggered by the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. According to border officials, these arrests occurred as many more wait at the frontier, pleading for entry into India.
The Border Security Force (BSF) reported that hundreds of Bangladeshis are stranded in no-man’s land along the border, seeking refuge. Deputy Inspector General Amit Kumar Tyagi confirmed that 11 Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested since Sunday for attempting to “sneak” into West Bengal.
Hindus, who form the largest minority in predominantly Muslim Bangladesh, have been long-standing supporters of Hasina’s Awami League. Following her abrupt resignation and flight to India on August 5, marking the end of her 15-year rule, reports of attacks on Hindu households, temples, and businesses have surged.
With a 4,000-kilometer shared border, large portions of which remain unfenced, Bangladesh is almost entirely surrounded by India. Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, also noted that four Bangladeshi nationals were “repelled” from entering the state.
