A recent survey conducted by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and YouGov highlights growing concerns among Indian Americans about US-India relations if Donald Trump returns to the presidency. The survey, which gathered responses from 1,206 Indian-American adults in October, reveals that while many are optimistic about India’s future, they remain wary of the potential impact of a second Trump administration on the relationship between the two countries.
The survey finds that Indian Americans view President Joe Biden’s handling of US-India ties more positively than Trump’s first term. A hypothetical administration under Kamala Harris was also deemed better for bilateral relations than a second Trump term. The poll revealed significant partisan divisions, with 66% of Indian-American Republicans favoring Trump over Biden on India, while 50% of Indian-American Democrats preferred Biden.
Additionally, tensions between the US and India have simmered, especially over issues like the federal indictment of Indian billionaire Gautam Adani and a controversial alleged assassination plot involving Indian intelligence officers. Despite these tensions, the majority of Indian Americans remain relatively unaware of the “murder-for-hire” plot, with only half of respondents familiar with the case.
On the issue of Israel and Palestine, the survey shows a partisan divide, with Indian-American Democrats more sympathetic to Palestinians, while Republicans are generally more supportive of Israel.
As US-India relations continue to evolve, Indian Americans are closely watching the political developments in both countries, especially as the 2024 elections approach.
