A seminar on the topic “Water in the Indus River for Food Security” was held at Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture Multan, bringing together experts from academic institutions, government departments, development organizations, and research institutions. The seminar featured detailed discussions on water conservation, sustainable agricultural production, efficient irrigation management, climate change, and food security. The session was chaired by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Asif Ali (Tamgha-e-Imtiaz).
Experts emphasized that water conservation, modern irrigation systems, and effective measures for small-scale farmers are the need of the hour. Speakers stated that sustainable agricultural development and food security in Pakistan cannot be achieved without ensuring the availability of water in the Indus River and its efficient utilization. Participants also agreed that, in order to address the challenges posed by climate change, modern scientific research, effective policymaking, and practical guidance for farmers must be given priority. Dr. Irfan Ahmed Baig briefed the participants about the Water Cluster and its role in promoting integrated and sustainable water management. Dr. Muhammad Saifullah highlighted the importance of WaPOR products for effective water monitoring and management in the South Punjab region under the FAO-funded project.
Dr. Bakshal Lashari highlighted trends in agricultural production and water scarcity over the past 30 years, emphasizing the challenges emerging from changing conditions in the Indus River. Dr. Abu Bakar Muhammad spoke about the importance of water conservation and sustainable irrigation, stating that concrete measures are essential to ensure benefits for farmers and promote the systematic use of water. Professor Dr. Muhammad Ashfaq stressed the need to promote modern irrigation techniques and improved water management. Other experts also highlighted the need for a comprehensive strategy in view of limited water availability and increasing water requirements of crops. Dr. Syeda Maria Zaidi highlighted the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) initiatives under the WaPOR project, emphasizing the use of water accounting and monitoring as effective tools to address the growing challenges of water scarcity and sustainable water management. Dr. Wasif Yousaf and Engr. Kamran from the Punjab Irrigation Department also participated in the Water Dialogue and highlighted the critical role of water storage in strengthening water security. They also discussed the importance of WaPOR products in supporting evidence-based water management, improved irrigation planning, and efficient utilization of water resources.
At the conclusion of the seminar, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Asif Ali stated that the Indus River and water conservation must be viewed in direct connection with Pakistan’s food security and agricultural future. He said that strong collaboration among educational institutions, government departments, development organizations, researchers, industry, and farmers is essential to address water-related challenges. He further stated that Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture Multan would continue to play its role in promoting sustainable agriculture and food security through research, awareness, and practical initiatives.
The participants expressed their commitment to ensuring efficient water utilization, sustainable agricultural development, and food security in Pakistan through mutual cooperation, joint research, and practical initiatives.
