International Human Rights Conference in Doha Highlights AI and Ethics: Interview with Assoc. Prof. Ana Dzhumalieva, PhD from Bulgaria

Doha, Qatar – The fourth session of the international conference titled “Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Opportunities, Risks, and Visions for a Better Future,” organized by the National Human Rights Committee of Qatar, has brought together distinguished experts from around the world to discuss the profound impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on human rights.
Among the notable participants was Assoc. Prof. Ana Dzhumalieva, PhD, a respected scholar in international law specializing in Private International Law and International Maritime Law from Bulgaria. Dr. Dzhumalieva is a strong advocate for human rights and anti-discrimination efforts and has served as Chairperson of the Bulgarian previous
Commission for Protection against Discrimination. She attended the conference to share her expertise and engage in discussions on the ethical implications of AI technologies.
On the sidelines of the conference, Haroon Qureshi from Rahbar Kisan International conducted an exclusive interview with Dr. Dzhumalieva.
When asked what the invitation to the conference meant to her, Assoc. Prof. Dzhumalieva expressed that it was a great honor to be invited to such a prestigious international gathering. She deeply values the recognition of her longstanding work in the field of human rights and extended her thanks to the National Human Rights Committee of Qatar and its partners for the opportunity. She also expressed gratitude to His Excellency Mr. Sultan bin Hassan Al-Jamali for his kind invitation and leadership in the global dialogue on human rights.
Discussing the importance of the relationship between AI and human rights today, Dr. Dzhumalieva noted that artificial intelligence is transforming societies worldwide. While AI offers significant opportunities, it also presents risks, including potential discrimination and violations of fundamental rights.
When asked about her concerns regarding AI and discrimination, she highlighted algorithmic bias as one of the most troubling issues. She explained that when AI replicates existing social inequalities, it can lead to discriminatory outcomes affecting areas such as employment, access to services, and even the justice system.
On whether AI can help fight discrimination, Dr. Dzhumalieva responded affirmatively, emphasizing that responsibly developed AI can help detect patterns of inequality and support the creation of data-driven policies. AI can also play an important role in monitoring and reporting discriminatory practices.
Regarding the role of institutions like the one she previously led, Dr. Dzhumalieva described her tenure as Chairperson of the Bulgarian Commission for Protection against Discrimination, where their mission was to advocate for transparency and inclusion in technological development. important work.
Speaking about Qatar’s role in organizing such conferences, she praised Qatar’s significant contribution. She called the event a valuable platform for exchanging best practices and building international relationships. Dr. Dzhumalieva acknowledged Qatar’s strategic plan for AI and described it as highly important.
In her message to the people of Qatar, Dr. Dzhumalieva conveyed warm regards, saying that Qatar has many friends in Bulgaria, where people truly admire and respect the Qatari people. She expressed confidence that building bridges between Bulgaria and Qatar sends a strong and positive message for the future.
