TEHRAN, Oct. 5 – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi announced Saturday that the recent cooperation agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reached in Cairo is no longer valid, following the reimposition of United Nations sanctions under the snapback mechanism.
Speaking at a press conference, Araghchi said the enforcement of snapback measures had “changed the circumstances,” stressing that Iran now faces “a new situation.” He added that there was no legitimate basis for triggering the mechanism, warning it would further complicate negotiations and obstruct diplomatic efforts at a time when dialogue is urgently needed.
In September, Iran and the IAEA agreed in Cairo on a framework allowing inspections under the supervision of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, following months of suspended cooperation after Israeli and United States strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and the killing of nuclear scientists. The deal aimed to address Tehran’s security and safety concerns while easing tensions and creating new opportunities for engagement.
Araghchi reiterated that Iran has consistently demonstrated it does not seek nuclear weapons, emphasizing diplomacy as the only effective path to resolve the standoff peacefully and prevent further escalation in the region.
The so called E3, Britain, France, and Germany, activated the snapback mechanism in August, leading to the automatic restoration of United Nations sanctions after the Security Council failed to extend sanctions relief in September.
