Tehran dismissed the threats from the United States and Israel regarding its nuclear ambitions and regional influence, asserting that the two nations cannot harm Iran. The comments followed a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Jerusalem, where they discussed efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear program and influence in the Middle East.
Netanyahu emphasized Israel’s significant impact on Iran since the onset of the Gaza conflict, vowing with US President Donald Trump’s backing that they would continue their efforts. In response, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated, “When it comes to a country like Iran, they cannot do a damn thing,” dismissing any potential threat from Israel and the US.
While President Trump has shown a willingness to negotiate with Tehran, he reinstated the “maximum pressure” campaign to halt Iran’s nuclear development. Despite engaging in dialogue, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei criticized the previous US administration for breaking promises. The US’s 2018 exit from the nuclear deal and the re-imposition of sanctions crippled Iran’s economy, prompting Tehran to accelerate its nuclear enrichment process, which it claims is for peaceful purposes.
Although Tehran stands firm in its defiance, its regional influence has been undermined. Key allies in the “Axis of Resistance” — including Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and various Shia militias — have been severely weakened or dismantled since the escalation of the Gaza conflict and the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
