Iran fired a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict in the region. This attack is reportedly in retaliation for Israel’s military actions against Hezbollah allies in Lebanon and the recent killings of their leaders, including Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh.
Alarms sounded throughout Israel, prompting citizens to seek shelter as explosions were heard in Jerusalem and the Jordan River valley. Reporters on state television were seen lying flat on the ground during live broadcasts as the situation unfolded. Eyewitnesses reported missile interceptions in the airspace of neighboring Jordan, with Israeli media estimating that up to 100 missiles were launched.
The Israeli military later confirmed that a substantial number of missiles had been intercepted, stating there was no longer a threat and that citizens could safely leave protected areas. Reports suggest that between 150 and 200 missiles were involved in the attack, marking it as Iran’s second missile strike against Israel, following a similar attack in April.
Israeli officials have vowed to retaliate, with military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari stating, “This attack will have consequences. We have plans, and we will operate at the place and time we decide.” Emergency services reported light injuries among civilians, with only minor injuries attributed to shrapnel in the Tel Aviv area.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards stated that the missile strike was a direct response to the deaths of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. They warned of “crushing attacks” against Israel if it retaliates, further escalating tensions in an already volatile region.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reportedly ordered the missile launch, emphasizing Tehran’s readiness for any potential retaliation. The Iranian mission to the United Nations characterized the missile attack as a “legal, rational, and legitimate response to the terrorist acts” committed by Israel.
