Tehran, June 22, 2025 – Iran’s parliament has approved a motion to close the vital Strait of Hormuz to naval traffic in response to recent U.S. airstrikes on three of its nuclear sites, a senior lawmaker announced Sunday.
Major General Esmaeil Kowsari, a member of the parliament’s National Security Commission, confirmed the development in remarks broadcast by state-run Press TV. “The parliament has reached the conclusion that the Strait of Hormuz should be closed,” he said.
However, the final decision now rests with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the country’s top security body.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global chokepoint for oil exports, and its closure could have significant implications for international energy markets and regional stability.
Tensions escalated sharply after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed early Sunday that American forces had struck nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. The strikes mark a significant intensification of the U.S.-backed Israeli military campaign against Iran, which began on June 13.
In retaliation, Iran has launched a series of missile attacks on Israel. According to Israeli authorities, at least 25 people have been killed and hundreds injured.
The Iranian Health Ministry reported that ongoing Israeli strikes have resulted in 430 deaths and more than 3,500 injuries within Iran.
As the situation worsens, the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz signals a new phase of confrontation that could disrupt maritime security and global energy flows. The international community is closely monitoring developments for signs of further escalation.
