TEHRAN, Feb. 2 – Iran is reviewing the details and broader framework of potential negotiations with the United States, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Monday, signaling that Tehran is in the decision-making phase.
Speaking at a weekly press conference, Baghaei addressed Western media reports suggesting that talks between Tehran and Washington could begin within days in Türkiye. He said Iran is carefully assessing all aspects of the matter, stressing that timing is critical given what he described as past “abuses” during earlier negotiation rounds.
Baghaei noted that regional countries are serving as intermediaries, relaying messages between the two sides. He added that Iran’s previous experiences with the United States were marked by broken commitments, culminating last June in attacks carried out by Israel and the United States, which he described as contradictory to diplomatic engagement.
Reaffirming Iran’s position, Baghaei said Tehran remains committed to diplomacy as a means of safeguarding national interests and regional stability. He emphasized that lifting or easing U.S. sanctions remains Iran’s priority and would be key to building trust and addressing concerns related to its nuclear program.
Tensions remain elevated following increased U.S. military deployments to the Middle East in late January. U.S. President Donald Trump warned that failure to reach a nuclear agreement could have serious consequences.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi told CNN that a “just, fair, and equitable” nuclear deal is achievable if Washington abandons coercive policies.
