Damascus, August 25, 2025 — Israeli forces have set up military positions in the strategic village of Rakhlah, southwest of Damascus, approximately 20 kilometers from the Syrian capital, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Monday.
According to the Britain-based war monitor, the positions were established on August 21 in the Mount Hermon area, which overlooks three major roads linking Damascus with Lebanon’s Baalbek and Beirut.
The observatory stated that the move provides Israel with a “significant strategic advantage,” placing its forces within artillery range of key highways, including the Beirut-Masnaa and Beirut-Zahle routes, which serve as vital supply lines for Hezbollah.
The deployment appears to be part of Israel’s broader strategy to encircle Hezbollah and potentially disrupt its supply routes.
There has been no official statement from Syrian authorities regarding the reported deployment.
Israel has carried out repeated airstrikes in southern Syria, targeting military sites and installations it says are linked to Hezbollah and Iran. Establishing a fixed presence on the ground near Damascus marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations, raising concerns about further regional instability.
