On the first day of Eid al-Adha, the Israeli army ordered the evacuation of multiple neighborhoods in northern Gaza, triggering widespread fear and condemnation as it announced plans to launch fresh airstrikes on civilian infrastructure.
Army spokesperson Avichay Adraee issued a warning on Friday to residents of blocks 608, 609, 615, and 616 in northern Gaza, urging them to “evacuate immediately westward.” Describing it as a “pre-attack alert,” Adraee claimed the areas would be targeted due to potential rocket activity—despite no such incidents reported that day.
The neighborhoods affected are home to Palestinians previously displaced during earlier stages of the war. Though limited returns to northern Gaza were allowed in recent months, the new evacuation order has again uprooted families during one of Islam’s holiest festivals.
Since launching its military offensive in October 2023, Israel has faced mounting international criticism for its actions in Gaza. According to local health authorities, nearly 54,700 Palestinians—most of them women and children—have been killed. Aid organizations continue to warn of an imminent famine threatening over 2 million residents of the besieged enclave.
Despite ongoing calls for a ceasefire, Israel has escalated its operations. Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes. The country is also the subject of a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The renewed evacuation orders on a sacred religious holiday have further fueled global outrage, as humanitarian conditions in Gaza worsen by the day.
