TOKYO, March 27 – Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has urged the U.S. to exempt Japan from its newly imposed 25% tariff on automobiles, calling the decision “deeply regrettable.” He directed officials to intensify negotiations and explore all possible measures to secure relief.
During a 50-minute meeting with Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, and other key officials, Ishiba emphasized the need for a coordinated government response. Iwaya later stated that Japan would assess the tariff’s impact on its industrial sector and continue diplomatic efforts for an exemption.
At a press conference, Hayashi warned that the tariff could harm Japan-U.S. economic relations, disrupt global trade, and negatively impact the multilateral trade system.
Japan’s strategy includes diplomatic pressure, evaluating economic effects, and financial support for affected industries. Officials are also engaging with business leaders and trade partners to mitigate potential economic fallout and safeguard Japan’s automotive sector
