MIRPUR (AJK), March 6: A Kashmiri delegation, attending the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, held separate meetings with UN Special Rapporteurs, officials, and members of the diplomatic community, highlighting the ongoing situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
Led by veteran freedom struggle leader Altaf Hussain Wani, the delegation includes APHC Convener Ghulam Muhammad Safi, Mrs. Shamim Shawl, Sardar Amjad Yousaf Khan, and APHC General Secretary Advocate Parvez Ahmed Shah.
The delegation met with UN Special Rapporteurs on human rights defenders, extrajudicial executions, freedom of religion or belief, cultural rights, and right to adequate housing. Each official was briefed individually according to their respective mandates.
They expressed gratitude for the communications sent to the Government of India and urged the UN to continue pressing India to repeal draconian laws that provide impunity and facilitate human rights violations.
During discussions with diplomats, the delegation emphasized the need for India to end repression in IIOJK and called for the creation of conditions for a UN-supervised plebiscite to determine the will of the Kashmiri people.
The delegation’s meetings reaffirmed the ongoing international advocacy for human rights and self-determination in IIOJK.
