Nairobi, Aug. 17 – The Chinese-built Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) has reached a major milestone, completing 3,000 days of safe operation as of Saturday, according to Africa Star Railway Operation Company Limited (Afristar).
Since opening on May 31, 2017, the 472-kilometer railway has carried nearly 15.93 million passengers and transported more than 41.96 million tons of cargo. The SGR, stretching from the port city of Mombasa to Nairobi, is the first new railway built in Kenya since independence and a flagship project of China-Kenya cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Constructed and operated by China Road and Bridge Corporation, the line was designed to Chinese standards, incorporating advanced technologies, equipment, and management practices. Afristar noted that the SGR has significantly enhanced Kenya’s transport efficiency and contributed to raising the country’s GDP by 1.5 percent.
Beyond its economic impact, the project has generated approximately 74,000 jobs and provided specialized training to 2,800 Kenyan professionals in modern railway technology, strengthening local expertise and long-term capacity.
Afristar emphasized that the railway’s safe and efficient service has not only provided Kenyans with a reliable travel option but also fostered trade growth and regional economic development, marking it as a symbol of enduring China-Kenya partnership.
