MOSCOW April 13 – The Kremlin said Monday it will not congratulate Hungary’s prime minister elect Peter Magyar on his election victory following a parliamentary vote held a day earlier.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow does not send congratulations to unfriendly countries and described Hungary as an unfriendly state due to its support for sanctions against Russia in remarks to the Life news website.
Peskov added that Russia had maintained dialogue with outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Earlier Peskov said Hungary’s voters had made their choice and Russia respects the outcome of Sunday’s election in which Magyar defeated Orban ending his 16 year tenure.
He said Russia remains interested in maintaining good relations with Hungary and other European countries and noted signals of willingness for continued dialogue.
Peskov added that Moscow looks forward to continuing pragmatic contacts with the new Hungarian leadership.
According to Hungary’s National Election Office the opposition Tisza Party led by Peter Magyar secured 69.35 percent of the vote and 138 seats with 98.94 percent of ballots counted.
