Kyiv, August 29 (AA) — At least 18 people, including four children, were killed early Thursday when Russia launched a massive strike on the Ukrainian capital, causing destruction across all districts of the city.
The head of the Kyiv City Military Administration (KMVA), Tymur Tkachenko, confirmed that rescuers uncovered another body, raising the toll to 18. He said the attack left damage at 33 locations, with responders active at 18 sites. In the Holosiivskyi district alone, up to 80 homes were affected.
Emergency teams are working to restore gas and electricity, while the Interior Ministry has deployed mobile service centers to assist residents. Tkachenko said urgent funds from material reserves will be issued to support recovery.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko declared Friday, August 29, a day of mourning. Flags will be lowered on state and municipal buildings, and entertainment events suspended.
Earlier reports indicated 14 dead and 48 injured. The Kyiv Prosecutor’s Office confirmed destruction in eight districts, including Darnytskyi, where part of a residential building collapsed, leaving residents trapped under rubble. Cars, private homes, and high-rise windows were also destroyed.
The European Union Delegation building in Kyiv sustained severe damage. EU Ambassador Katarina Mathernova condemned the strike as “Moscow’s true answer to peace efforts.”
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack “a horrific and deliberate killing of civilians,” stressing that dozens of residential and office buildings were damaged. He accused Russia of rejecting diplomacy, adding: “These missiles and drones are a response to calls for ceasefire. Russia chooses strikes instead of negotiations.”
Zelenskyy urged China, Hungary, and other countries to strongly condemn Moscow and pressed for tougher international sanctions against Russia’s continued aggression.
